Crazy Eights
The classic "get rid of your cards" game that inspired Uno.
Setup
Deal 8 cards each (5 if more than 2 players). Flip one card to start the discard pile. Remaining cards are the draw pile.
How to Play
- Play a card matching the top card's suit or rank.
- If you can't play, draw from the pile until you can.
- 8s are wild — play any 8 and choose the new suit.
How to Win
First player to discard all their cards wins.
Save your 8s for when you're stuck or want to change the suit to something you have a lot of.
Is Crazy Eights Right for You?
Crazy Eights is the gateway shedding game and the one everyone already half-knows because it is the public-domain ancestor of Uno. Reach for it with kids or a casual table who want rules you can explain in thirty seconds.
Maybe skip it if: If you want meaningful decisions rather than playing whatever matches, this will feel thin fast.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting that an eight is wild and lets you NAME the next suit, not just match it.
- Letting players stack draws or skip turns; base Crazy Eights has no action cards beyond the wild eight unless you agree to house rules first.
Strategy Tips
- Hold an eight for when you are stuck or about to go out, not as your first dump.
- Track which suit your opponents keep changing away from; it usually means they are short in it.
Popular Variations
Two-card draw cap vs draw-until-match
Some tables make you draw exactly one card if you cannot play; the classic rule is to keep drawing from the stock until you can play or it runs out.
Our Take
We think of Crazy Eights as training wheels for the whole shedding genre: genuinely fun with young kids, but most adults graduate to Uno or Palace within a session. It earns its spot as the simplest real card game worth teaching.
