Gin Rummy
The refined 2-player version of Rummy. Knock when your unmatched cards are low enough.
Setup
Deal 10 cards each. Place remaining cards face-down. Flip one card face-up.
How to Play
- Draw from the deck or discard pile.
- Form melds (sets of 3+ same rank, or runs of 3+ same suit).
- Knock when your unmatched card value is 10 or less — or go Gin with zero unmatched cards.
- Opponent can add their cards to your melds after you knock.
How to Win
First to 100 points across rounds. Gin scores a 25pt bonus.
Try to keep track of what your opponent picks up — don't discard cards they're collecting.
Is Gin Rummy Right for You?
Gin Rummy is the definitive two-player rummy, fast and tense, where you race to form melds and then knock the moment your leftover deadwood is low enough. Reach for it when two people want a sharp, repeatable head-to-head with real decisions every turn.
Maybe skip it if: It is strictly a two-hander; the three- and four-player workarounds never feel as clean.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Believing you must empty your whole hand; you only need ten or fewer points of deadwood to knock, and gin (zero deadwood) is optional.
- Forgetting that the non-knocker can lay off deadwood onto the knocker's melds to reduce their own count and possibly undercut.
Strategy Tips
- Knock early rather than chasing gin; a fast ten-point knock often beats holding out and getting undercut.
- Hold middle cards like 6s, 7s and 8s slightly longer since they connect into more possible runs than edge ranks.
Popular Variations
Oklahoma Gin
The first upcard sets the maximum deadwood you may knock with that hand; if it is an ace, you must go gin.
Hollywood Scoring
Three games are tracked simultaneously across columns, stretching a session into a longer match.
Our Take
We think Gin Rummy is the best two-player card game built on melding, and the knock-or-press decision keeps it endlessly replayable. If you only learn one rummy variant, make it this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between knocking and going gin?
Knocking means ending the hand with ten or fewer points of deadwood; going gin means having zero deadwood, which earns a bonus and cannot be undercut.
What does undercut mean in Gin Rummy?
If the defender ends up with equal or less deadwood than the knocker after laying off, they undercut the knocker and score a bonus instead.
