Rummy

ClassicStrategy

Form sets and runs before your opponents. A timeless card game of skill and memory.

Setup

Deal 10 cards each (7 for 3+ players). Place remaining cards face-down as draw pile, flip one to start the discard pile.

How to Play

  1. Draw a card from the draw or discard pile.
  2. Optionally lay down sets (3+ of same rank) or runs (3+ consecutive same suit).
  3. Optionally add cards to existing melds on the table.
  4. Discard one card to end your turn.

How to Win

First to get rid of all their cards wins the round. Score based on cards left in opponents' hands.

💡 Tip

Watch the discard pile — if someone picks up a card, you know what they're collecting.

Is Rummy Right for You?

Basic Rummy is the gentle on-ramp to the whole rummy family, ideal for two to six players of mixed ages who want a relaxed game of melding runs and sets and discarding what they cannot use. Reach for it when you want something everyone already half-knows and can learn in one hand.

Maybe skip it if: Players who crave deep tactical decisions may find it too loose and luck-driven compared to Gin or 500.

Popular Variations

Block Rummy

When the stock runs out, play simply ends and hands are scored rather than reshuffling the discard pile to continue.

Round-the-Corner

Aces may sit either low (A-2-3) or high (Q-K-A) in a run, depending on the table's agreement.

Our Take

We love basic Rummy as the friendly common ancestor of dozens of better-known games, and it is the perfect first card game to teach. It is light rather than deep, but it never overstays its welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards do you deal in Rummy?

For two players deal ten cards each; for three or four deal seven each; for five or six deal six each, from a single 52-card deck.

Can you pick up the whole discard pile in basic Rummy?

No. In basic Rummy you draw only the single top card of the discard pile or the top of the stock. Scooping the whole pile is a feature of 500 Rummy, not basic Rummy.
