Speed
A lightning-fast 2-player game with no turns — just pure speed.
Setup
Deal 20 cards to each player. Set 2 cards face-down in the centre as starter piles, and 2 face-down replacement piles beside them.
How to Play
- Both players flip the 2 centre cards simultaneously — game begins!
- Play cards from your hand onto either centre pile if they are one higher or lower (wraps: K→A→2).
- No turns — play as fast as possible.
- When both players are stuck, flip the replacement piles.
How to Win
First player to play all their cards wins.
Don't look at just one pile — keep your eyes on both centre piles at all times.
Is Speed Right for You?
Speed is a frantic two-player race where both players play simultaneously, slapping cards onto two center piles in ascending or descending sequence. Reach for it when you want a fast, adrenaline-fueled head-to-head that lasts under two minutes a round.
Maybe skip it if: If you dislike real-time pressure or want a turn-based thinking game, the chaos and hand speed will frustrate you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting that sequence wraps both ways, so you can play a King or a 2 onto an Ace.
- Each player flips their five replacement-pile cards at the same time only when both are stuck, not whenever one player feels jammed.
Strategy Tips
- Keep your eyes on both center piles at once rather than fixating on a single playable card.
- Play your higher-flexibility cards (those near the middle of the rank order) when you have a choice, holding extremes for when you need them.
Popular Variations
Spit
A closely related cousin where players race to empty their stock onto the center; many people use the names Speed and Spit interchangeably.
Our Take
We love Speed as a quick palate-cleanser; it is one of the only card games that rewards pure reflexes and pattern spotting at the same time. It is two-player only and exhausting in the best way, so we play it in short bursts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can play Speed?
Speed is designed for exactly two players. A third person can deal and referee, but only two race at a time.
How long is a game of Speed?
A single round usually lasts under two minutes, which is why people play best-of series.
