Won the Spiel des Jahres 2021. Draft habitat tiles and wildlife tokens, building a nature scene where animals follow unique scoring rules. Deeply calming but rich in decisions.
Is Cascadia Right for You?
Best for
Cascadia is the calm, accessible puzzle game for almost anyone β families, couples, solo players, and gamers who want something low-conflict at the end of a long day. You draft habitat tiles and wildlife tokens to build a serene Pacific Northwest scene, and the rules take minutes to learn.
Maybe skip it ifβ¦
There is essentially no player interaction beyond a shared draft pool, so anyone craving competition or confrontation will find it too gentle. It is a multiplayer-solitaire puzzle by design.
How to Play Cascadia
Setup
Pool of 3 habitat+wildlife pairs. Each player starts with 3 arranged tiles.
On Your Turn
- Choose one habitat tile + paired wildlife token.
- Place tile adjacent to existing. Place token on a valid tile.
- Optionally pay 1 pinecone to refresh the pool.
How to Win
Score wildlife patterns per scoring cards. Bonus for largest habitat corridors. Pinecones worth 1pt each.
π‘ Strategy Tips
Plan corridors early. Read wildlife scoring cards first β they change every game.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting that the habitat tile and the wildlife token are linked in the draft β you take a pair, so plan for both at once.
- Chasing wildlife points while neglecting habitat corridors, which award bonus points for the largest connected areas.
- Overpaying pinecones (nature tokens) early; they let you break the tile-token pairing and are precious β spend them deliberately.
- Ignoring the specific wildlife scoring cards in play, which change every game and should drive your placement decisions.
Advanced Strategy
- Read the four wildlife scoring cards before your first placement β your whole strategy should bend toward whichever patterns are most lucrative this game.
- Plan habitat corridors early; the largest-corridor bonuses are easy to lose by one tile if you do not commit.
- Keep at least one pinecone in reserve for the late game when grabbing the exact tile-token pair you need is worth the cost.
- Sometimes take a slightly worse tile to deny an opponent the wildlife token they obviously need.
Variants & House Rules
Scoring card families (A/B/C/D)
The box includes multiple scoring rule sets for each animal. Mixing families changes the puzzle completely and is the main source of replayability.
Landmarks expansion
Adds unique landmark tiles with their own scoring, giving the calm base game a bit more variety and ambition.

Our Verdict
Cascadia won the Spiel des Jahres 2021 and is the game we hand to people who want something relaxing but not mindless. It is quick, beautiful, deeply replayable thanks to its swappable scoring cards, and superb solo. If your table wants confrontation, look elsewhere β for everyone else it is near-perfect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cascadia good for solo play?
Yes β it has a built-in solo mode and the puzzle holds up beautifully alone. Many people buy it primarily as a solo game.
Is Cascadia good for beginners and families?
Ideal. The rules take about five minutes to teach, the theme is gentle, and there is no direct conflict, while the scoring still gives experienced gamers plenty to optimise.
What makes Cascadia replayable?
Each wildlife type has several different scoring cards, and you mix one from each at random per game. That alone produces a huge number of distinct puzzles before you even add the Landmarks expansion.
