About Earth

Earth is a tableau-builder about growing an ecosystem, and its defining feature is that every action taken by any player gives everybody a smaller version of it. Nobody sits idle, which keeps a four-player game moving far faster than the card count suggests. The card pool is enormous, so no two tableaus develop the same way.

Is Earth Right for You?

Best for

Earth is for players who like Wingspan-style tableau games but hate downtime. Because everyone acts on every turn, a four-player game plays at nearly the speed of two, and the sheer card variety means the game rewards repeat plays heavily. Two and three are best for planning, but four is entirely playable.

Maybe skip it if…

The card pool is huge and largely text-based, so the first game involves a lot of reading and the iconography takes a while to settle. Players who want strong direct interaction will find that the follow mechanism, ironically, is most of the interaction there is.

How to Play Earth

Setup

Give each player an island board, a starting terrain card and a secret objective. Lay out the card market and the shared event row.

On Your Turn

  1. Choose one of four actions: plant, compost, water or grow, and take the full version for yourself.
  2. Every other player simultaneously takes the reduced version of that same action.
  3. Place new cards into your four-by-four tableau, triggering any chained abilities.

How to Win

The game ends once a player fills their four-by-four grid. Score cards, objectives, soil and sprouts; highest total wins.

💡 Strategy Tips

The follow action is not a consolation prize. A well-built tableau earns more from other people's turns than its own.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing actions purely for your own benefit. Handing three opponents exactly the action they needed is a real cost and new players ignore it entirely.
  • Building a tableau with no engine. Cards that trigger on other players' actions are the point; a grid of one-off scoring cards underperforms badly.
  • Forgetting the game ends when someone fills sixteen spaces. A player rushing the grid can end it two turns before you were ready.
  • Neglecting soil and sprouts. They look like fiddly bookkeeping and are a substantial share of the final score.

Advanced Strategy

  • Prioritise cards that trigger on the follow action above almost everything else. They fire three or four times as often.
  • Read your secret objective before your second placement and shape the grid around it. Retrofitting is expensive.
  • Watch the grid sizes around the table. Knowing who is two cards from ending it changes what you can afford to set up.
  • Compost is undervalued by most players. Cycling toward the cards you actually want beats hoarding a hand you cannot deploy.

Variants & House Rules

Earth: Abundance

An expansion adding new card types, islands and events for groups who have the base pool feeling familiar.

Solo mode

An included automated opponent that takes actions you then follow, preserving the core loop surprisingly well alone.

Our Verdict

Earth quietly solves the biggest problem with tableau games, which is watching other people take their turns. The follow mechanism keeps everyone reading their own board constantly, and the card variety gives it enormous legs. It is a little text-heavy on first play and thoroughly worth pushing through that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Earth similar to Wingspan?

They share a nature theme and a tableau structure, but Earth is denser, faster at high player counts and built around following other players' actions.

Does it play well at four?

Yes, better than most games of its weight, precisely because nobody is idle. Two and three give more planning control.

Is the card text overwhelming?

The first game is heavy going. After that the icon vocabulary settles and it plays quickly.
