About Heat: Pedal to the Metal

Heat is a racing game built on a beautifully simple idea: you choose a gear, play that many cards, and every time you push harder than the car wants you take heat into your deck. Corners have speed limits, and blowing through one costs you heat you may not have. It plays up to six, teaches in ten minutes, and still leaves room for genuinely clever driving.

Is Heat: Pedal to the Metal Right for You?

Best for

Heat is the best modern racing game for a mixed table. It teaches in about ten minutes, plays six without dragging, and the slipstream rule keeps trailing players genuinely in contention rather than watching a runaway leader. If you want one game that works equally well with your gaming group and with relatives who last played Monopoly, this is a very strong candidate.

Maybe skip it if…

Anyone hoping for a deep simulation should look elsewhere; this is a card-management game wearing a racing skin. And while it plays six, a full table does mean a fair amount of simultaneous card-flipping to resolve each turn.

How to Play Heat: Pedal to the Metal

Setup

Each player takes a car, a matching deck, and a player board with the heat cards loaded into the engine. Place cars on the starting grid and deal an opening hand.

On Your Turn

  1. Shift your gear up or down by one, then play exactly that many speed cards face down.
  2. Reveal simultaneously, move your car, and pay heat if you shifted aggressively or exceeded a corner speed limit.
  3. Draw back up, taking any heat that has cycled into your deck as dead cards.

How to Win

First car across the finish line after the agreed number of laps wins.

💡 Strategy Tips

Heat spent is heat gone. Plan a lap ahead so you enter a corner already in the right gear rather than braking inside it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating heat as free. Every heat you spend goes into your discard and comes back later as a card that does nothing, so a fast first lap can leave you crawling on the third.
  • Shifting more than one gear at a time without checking the cost. The jump is legal but it charges heat immediately, and new players often cannot pay it.
  • Ignoring corner speed limits until you are already in the corner. You need to be at or under the limit when you finish moving, which means planning the turn before.
  • Forgetting to use the slipstream. Ending your move directly behind another car gives you a free boost, and it is the main way a trailing player catches up.

Advanced Strategy

  • Count the corners on the lap ahead and decide where you intend to lose time. A deliberate slow corner is much cheaper than an emergency one.
  • Cooldown symbols on your played cards are as valuable as speed. Getting heat back out of your deck is what lets you push on the final lap.
  • Use the stress cards deliberately rather than dreading them. Flipping into a high value at the right moment can carry you through a straight.
  • In a tight pack, hanging one space back for a slipstream is often faster than leading, because the leader pays full price for every corner.

Variants & House Rules

Championship mode

The base box includes a full season across multiple tracks with upgrade cards drafted between races. It is the way most groups end up playing once they know the rules.

Legends module

Automated AI racers that fill out the grid at low player counts and drive with genuinely believable aggression. It also makes the solo game work.

Weather and road conditions

An included module that changes corner limits and heat costs per race. Adds variety without adding meaningful rules overhead.

Our Verdict

Heat is the most purely fun game on this list. The gear-and-heat system is one of those designs that seems obvious in hindsight and clearly is not, because nothing else has captured a race this well. It is our default recommendation when someone wants a game with real decisions that still gets a whole table shouting at the last corner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Heat work with six players?

Yes, and it is one of very few good games at that count. Turns resolve mostly simultaneously, so the extra players cost far less time than you would expect.

Is Heat good for two?

It works, but add the Legends AI racers to fill the grid. A two-car race loses the pack dynamics and the slipstream that make the game sing.

Do you need to like racing to enjoy it?

Not at all. The decisions are about hand management and risk, and plenty of players who have no interest in motorsport rate it highly.
