About Horrified
Horrified is a cooperative game designed by Prospero Hall and published by Ravensburger, in which the players defend a village from the classic Universal Studios monsters. Each monster needs a different puzzle solved before it can be defeated: Dracula's coffins must be smashed, for example, while other monsters have tasks of their own. Meanwhile you escort villagers to safety and try to keep the terror level down. It is an accessible co-op with more personality than most.

Is Horrified Right for You?
Best for
Horrified is for families and casual groups who want a cooperative game with more character than Pandemic and less rules overhead than most adventure games. Each monster is its own little puzzle, which gives the game variety from one play to the next. Two or three players is best, and it works solo. The monsters are drawn from classic films, which gives the table plenty to talk about.
Maybe skip it if…
Experienced co-op players may find it easy on the standard setting. The Universal monsters theme is gentle rather than frightening, so anyone wanting real horror should look elsewhere.
How to Play Horrified
Setup
Choose two monsters for an easy game, three for standard or four for a hard one. Each player takes a hero, and items and villagers are placed on the town map.
On Your Turn
- Take your hero's actions: move, guide villagers, pick up or share items, and work on the monsters' tasks.
- Draw a monster card, which places new items, triggers an event, and moves the listed monsters.
- Monsters that reach heroes or villagers attack. A defeated villager or hero raises the terror level.
How to Win
Defeat every monster in play. You lose if the terror level reaches its maximum or the monster deck runs out.
💡 Strategy Tips
Split up. Heroes standing together are efficient against one monster and useless against the others.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring villagers. Every villager lost raises the terror level, and terror loses more games than monsters do.
- Using items as soon as you pick them up. Items are the resource for defeating monsters; spend them where they matter.
- Chasing one monster with the whole team. The others keep attacking the village while you are away.
- Forgetting perk cards. They are one-off powers that can be used at key moments, and they often decide the game.
Advanced Strategy
- Read every monster's defeat condition before the first turn. Some take many turns of preparation.
- Plan around the monster deck. It is also the game's clock, so wasted turns count against you twice. Count the remaining cards before committing to a long plan.
- Leave a hero near the village centre to escort villagers while others work on monster tasks.
- Combine items with other players before a big attack. Pooling resources saves turns that the monster deck will not give back.

Our Verdict
Horrified is one of the best family co-ops on the market, and its monster puzzles give it more personality than most games in the genre. It is quick to teach, pleasantly tense, and the difficulty scales well. A good choice for families who have played Pandemic and want something with more flavour, and the standalone follow-ups mean there is somewhere to go next.
