About Onitama

Onitama is an elegant little abstract on a five-by-five board. Each player has five pawns and a master, and the available moves come from cards that pass back and forth between the players after every turn. The move you just used is the move your opponent gets next, which turns a simple game into a constant exercise in giving away as little as possible.

Is Onitama Right for You?

Best for

Onitama is a superb small abstract for two: fifteen minutes, no luck once the cards are dealt, and a beautiful production. The rotating card pool means the game changes shape between sessions despite an identical board, which keeps it fresher than most pure abstracts. Good for chess players and for people who find chess forbidding.

Maybe skip it if…

Like Hive it is a zero-luck abstract, so skill gaps show immediately and there is no way to disguise them. Anyone wanting theme or variety of components will find it austere.

How to Play Onitama

Setup

Place five pieces per player on your back row, master in the centre. Deal two move cards to each player and one to the side.

On Your Turn

  1. Choose one of your two move cards and move any one of your pieces according to its pattern.
  2. Capture by moving onto an opponent's piece.
  3. Place the used card to the side and take the card that was waiting there.

How to Win

Capture the opponent's master, or move your own master onto their starting temple square.

💡 Strategy Tips

Before you play a card, look at what it hands over. The strongest move is often the one that gives up the least.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Playing the strongest move available without checking what card it passes over. This is the entire game and beginners ignore it for several plays.
  • Rushing the master forward toward the temple. An exposed master is usually a captured master.
  • Trading pawns evenly. Material matters less here than position, and even trades often help whoever has the better cards.
  • Forgetting the second win condition. Players focus on capture and lose to a temple run they never watched for.

Advanced Strategy

  • Track the fifth card constantly. Knowing which move is about to become available to your opponent is most of the skill.
  • Cards with asymmetric moves are stronger in your hands than symmetric ones, because they are harder for the opponent to reuse effectively.
  • Keep your master on a square with several escape options. Mobility is worth more than advancement.
  • A pawn on the centre file constrains far more than a pawn on the edge. Fight for the middle even at cost.

Variants & House Rules

Onitama: Sensei's Path

An expansion of sixteen new move cards that mix into the base pool. Cheap and widely recommended.

Way of the Wind and Light & Shadow

Larger expansions adding new pieces and mechanisms. More divisive; Sensei's Path is the safe first buy.

Our Verdict

Onitama is a beautifully judged design that gets a genuinely deep game out of five cards and a tiny board. The card-passing mechanism is the sort of idea that seems obvious once seen and clearly was not. For a short, sharp two-player abstract it sits right alongside Hive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Onitama like chess?

It shares the feel of piece movement and capture, but the moves are shared and rotate, so opening theory does not exist. It is far more approachable.

How long is a game?

Usually ten to twenty minutes, which makes it very easy to play several in a row.

Is an expansion necessary?

No, but Sensei's Path is inexpensive and meaningfully increases variety. It is the most commonly recommended addition.
