About The Mind

The Mind is a cooperative card game by Wolfgang Warsch with one instruction: play your cards onto a single pile in ascending order, with no talking and no signals. Nobody takes turns. You simply wait until it feels right and put your card down. Each level deals one more card per player, and the silence gets heavier. It was nominated for the 2018 Spiel des Jahres.

Is The Mind Right for You?

Best for

The Mind is for groups who like a strange, quiet challenge and are happy to play it several times in a row. It suits families, couples and anyone curious about the feeling of a table slowly falling into the same rhythm. It fits in a pocket and teaches in one sentence. We think three players is the sweet spot, but it works at every count in the box.

Maybe skip it if…

Some players find it too slight to count as a game, and some find the silence awkward rather than tense. If your group needs conversation to have fun, it will fall flat very quickly.

How to Play The Mind

Setup

Shuffle the cards numbered 1 to 100. Set out lives and one throwing star according to player count; the team plays twelve levels at two players, ten at three and eight at four.

On Your Turn

  1. Deal each player as many cards as the current level number.
  2. Anyone may play their lowest card at any time. There are no turns and no communication.
  3. If a card is played out of order, lose a life and discard every lower card still in hand.

How to Win

Complete every level before running out of lives. The team wins or loses together.

💡 Strategy Tips

Agree nothing, but keep a steady internal count. Groups that settle into a shared rhythm do far better than groups that guess.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to invent signals. Tapping, nodding and pointed looks break the spirit of the game, and the rules forbid them.
  • Playing too soon after a low card goes down. Everyone else is judging the same gap, so give the pile a moment.
  • Hoarding the throwing star. It is most valuable on big hands, when the risk of a misplay is highest.
  • Forgetting you can pause. Any player can call for the group to stop and refocus, and it helps after a lost life.

Advanced Strategy

  • Count steadily in your head, roughly one number per second from the last card played. A shared tempo is the whole trick.
  • Watch hands, not faces. Someone reaching towards the pile is information, and it is allowed.
  • After a card far below yours, relax. After a card just below yours, get ready.
  • Start every level with everyone's hand flat on the table and a moment of focus. It resets the rhythm after a mistake.

Variants & House Rules

The Mind Extreme

A separate, harder game with two piles, one rising and one falling, played at the same time.

House rule: no rewards

Ignore the extra lives and throwing stars earned on some levels. A tougher challenge for a group that has already beaten the game.

Our Verdict

The Mind is a genuinely unusual game and a clever bit of design. It relies entirely on shared attention, and when a table gets it right the feeling is remarkable. It is short and cheap, and it will either delight your group or baffle them completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is counting out loud allowed?

No. No talking, no signals and no visible counting. Watching each other is fine.

How many levels are there?

Twelve with two players, ten with three and eight with four.

What does a throwing star do?

If everyone agrees to use one, each player discards their lowest card face up, which also tells the team where everyone's hands start.
