About 7 Wonders Duel

7 Wonders Duel takes the civilisation drafting of 7 Wonders and turns it into a head-to-head game with three ways to win. Cards are laid out in an interlocking pyramid where taking one uncovers others for your opponent, so every pick is a gift as much as a gain. It is widely considered one of the best two-player games ever designed.

Is 7 Wonders Duel Right for You?

Best for

This is our first recommendation for a couple who want one really good game. It plays in half an hour, teaches in ten minutes, and the three win conditions mean you are constantly watching two threats while pursuing a third. The card pyramid gives it a spatial tension that the original 7 Wonders, for all its virtues, never had.

Maybe skip it if…

Strictly two players, with no variant for more. It is also unforgiving of inattention: a player who stops tracking the military track or the science symbols can simply lose out of nowhere, which some people find abrupt rather than exciting.

How to Play 7 Wonders Duel

Setup

Build the age I card structure face up and face down as shown. Each player drafts four wonders. Place the military track marker in the centre.

On Your Turn

  1. Take any card that is not covered by another, then either build it, discard it for coins, or use it to construct a wonder.
  2. Resolve military conflict immediately when a card adds shields, pushing the marker toward your opponent.
  3. At the end of each age, rebuild the structure for the next one.

How to Win

Win immediately by military supremacy or by collecting six scientific symbols. Otherwise the highest civilian score after age III wins.

💡 Strategy Tips

Watch what your pick uncovers. Handing your opponent the card they needed is worse than missing the card you wanted.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring the military track until it is nearly at your capital. Military is a sudden-death condition and it moves faster than new players expect.
  • Letting an opponent collect science symbols unopposed. Six different symbols ends the game immediately, and by the time it looks threatening it is often too late.
  • Taking a card you want without checking what it uncovers. In the face-down rows this is how games are quietly lost.
  • Discarding for coins reluctantly. Taking three coins to deny your opponent a key card is a completely normal, strong play.

Advanced Strategy

  • Count the science symbols left in the deck. Denial is often worth more than a card you can actually use.
  • Wonders that grant an extra turn are the strongest effects in the game. Prioritise them and time them for the age transition.
  • Buying resources from the bank is frequently better than building production. Coins are flexible and production is not.
  • In age III, work out the exact civilian score you need before you draft. The last age is a maths problem more than a strategy one.

Variants & House Rules

7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon

Adds gods that can be recruited for powerful one-off effects. The most popular expansion and a substantial addition.

7 Wonders Duel: Agora

Introduces a senate and political conflict as a fourth axis. Divisive; try Pantheon first.

Our Verdict

7 Wonders Duel is close to a perfect two-player game. It is short, it is deep, and the three win conditions keep both players honest from the first card. A decade after release it remains the game we most often recommend to couples, and nothing has really displaced it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need 7 Wonders to play Duel?

No, it is entirely standalone and plays quite differently. Many people own only Duel.

Which expansion should I get first?

Pantheon. It adds meaningful choice without complicating the core loop, and it is the one most players keep in the box permanently.

Can more than two people play?

No. For three or more, play the original 7 Wonders instead.
