About Wyrmspan

Wyrmspan takes the shape of Wingspan and gives it more room to breathe: you excavate cave space before you can house a dragon there, and the dragons themselves interact far more aggressively than birds ever did. It is recognisably the same family of game, a step up in weight, and it stands on its own rather than needing the original.

Is Wyrmspan Right for You?

Best for

Wyrmspan is for players who liked Wingspan and found themselves wanting a bit more friction. The excavation layer means you cannot simply play the best card in hand, and the dragon abilities interact in longer chains, so a well-built row genuinely sings. It is best at two or three where the four rounds do not turn into a wait.

Maybe skip it if…

If you loved Wingspan specifically for how gentle and low-pressure it was, this is a noticeably heavier evening and may not be the upgrade you wanted. It also invites the obvious comparison at every turn, which is unfair to a good game but unavoidable.

How to Play Wyrmspan

Setup

Each player takes a player mat with three cavern rows, a starting hand of dragon and guild cards, and starting resources. Set up the guild hall and the public objectives.

On Your Turn

  1. Take one action: explore and excavate cave space, play a dragon into an excavated space, or activate a row.
  2. Activating a row triggers every dragon in it from right to left, chaining their abilities.
  3. Refill your hand and resources according to the row you used.

How to Win

After four rounds, score dragons, cached resources, guild progress and end-of-round objectives. Highest total wins.

💡 Strategy Tips

Excavation is the real bottleneck, not cards. Open up space before you have something desperate to put in it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Playing dragons wherever there is room rather than where the row activation order will chain them. Right-to-left sequencing is most of the skill.
  • Under-investing in excavation early. Cave space compounds, and a player who opens up their mat in round one is playing a different game by round three.
  • Treating the guild hall as flavour. Guild progress is a real scoring track and it is easy to finish the game having barely touched it.
  • Forgetting the game is only four rounds. It is shorter than it feels, and plans that need five rounds simply lose.

Advanced Strategy

  • Build one row deep rather than three rows wide. A five-card chain activated twice is worth more than fifteen isolated dragons.
  • Read the end-of-round objectives before your first excavation. They should shape which part of the mat you open up.
  • Cached resources on dragons score directly, so a dragon that stores is often better than one with a flashier one-off effect.
  • Track what your opponents are drafting from the guild hall. The good guild slots go early and there is no catching up on them.

Variants & House Rules

Wyrmspan: Dragon Academy

The first expansion, adding new dragons and an academy module. Aimed at players who have the base game well worn in.

Solo automa

Stonemaier ships their usual automated opponent, which competes for cards and objectives rather than simply ticking a score up.

Our Verdict

Wyrmspan had an impossible job and mostly pulls it off. It is a better game than Wingspan for experienced players and a worse first game for newcomers, which is exactly the trade a follow-up should make. If your group has played Wingspan into the ground, this is the natural next box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Wingspan to play Wyrmspan?

No. It is entirely standalone. The two share a designer lineage and a feel, but no components.

Is Wyrmspan harder than Wingspan?

Yes, moderately. The excavation layer and the longer ability chains add real decisions. Expect one extra teaching pass.

Which should I buy first?

Wingspan if the group is new to this style of game, Wyrmspan if they already know it and want more to chew on.
