About Air, Land, & Sea

Air, Land, & Sea is a two-player card game by Jon Perry, published by Arcane Wonders. The whole deck is eighteen cards, split across three theatres. Each battle you get a hand of six and no more, and you play them one at a time to win two of the three theatres. The clever part is the withdrawal rule: you can concede a battle at any point, and the earlier you retreat, the fewer points your opponent scores.

Is Air, Land, & Sea Right for You?

Best for

Air, Land, & Sea is for two players who want a proper strategic duel in twenty minutes and a small box. The deck is so small that both players quickly learn every card, so the game becomes about bluffing and timing rather than surprises. It suits couples and regular opponents who will play it many times.

Maybe skip it if…

It is strictly two players and very dry, with a war theme that is barely there. Anyone who wants to build something or dislikes conceding battles will struggle with the withdrawal rule that makes the game work.

How to Play Air, Land, & Sea

Setup

Lay out the three theatre cards in a row and deal six cards to each player. The first player card decides who leads and who wins ties.

On Your Turn

  1. Play one card: face up in its matching theatre to use its strength and ability, or face down in any theatre as a strength-two card.
  2. Alternatively, deploy nothing and withdraw from the battle, giving your opponent points based on how many cards you still hold.
  3. When both hands are empty, whoever controls two theatres wins the battle and six points.

How to Win

The first player to twelve victory points wins the war.

💡 Strategy Tips

Withdrawing is not failure. Giving up two points early is often better than losing six by playing it out.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Never withdrawing. Fighting every battle to the end hands your opponent six points in battles you were always going to lose.
  • Playing face down too readily. A face-down card is flexible, but it gives up the ability that makes the card valuable.
  • Forgetting the first player wins ties. Being first player changes which theatres are worth contesting.
  • Holding your best ability too long. Many abilities only matter if played before the theatre is decided.

Advanced Strategy

  • Count what remains. With eighteen cards and six in each hand, you can deduce most of what your opponent could still hold.
  • Withdraw with a large hand when a battle is clearly lost. The points you deny compound across the war.
  • Use the theatre order. Theatres shift between battles, and adjacency matters for several abilities.
  • Bluff with face-down cards. An unknown two in a theatre makes your opponent guess what you are protecting.

Our Verdict

Air, Land, & Sea is one of the best small two-player games, with a withdrawal rule that turns every battle into a negotiation about losses. It plays in the time it takes to make a cup of tea and rewards repeated play. If you want a short, sharp duel, it is an easy recommendation.
