About Herd Mentality

Herd Mentality is a party game from Big Potato where the right answer is simply the most popular one. Someone reads out a question, everyone secretly writes an answer, and whoever matches the majority earns a cow. The only player with a unique answer takes the Pink Cow, and while you hold it you cannot win. The rules take a minute to explain and the arguments about what counts as the same answer are half the fun.

Is Herd Mentality Right for You?

Best for

Herd Mentality is for big, mixed groups who want something that takes a minute to learn and gets everyone shouting. It plays well from six up to a dozen or more, and the questions are family-friendly, so it is a strong pick for Christmas gatherings and parties with a range of ages.

Maybe skip it if…

Players who want a real challenge or something to think about will find it slight. With only four people the majority is too small to be interesting, so it is better with more.

How to Play Herd Mentality

Setup

Give everyone a pad and pen, put the cow tokens and the Pink Cow in the middle, and shuffle the question cards.

On Your Turn

  1. One player reads a question card aloud.
  2. Everyone secretly writes down one answer.
  3. Reveal answers. Every player who gave the majority answer takes one cow token; if the answers split evenly, nobody scores.
  4. If exactly one player gave a unique answer, they take the Pink Cow from whoever holds it. Pass the reading duty on.

How to Win

The first player to reach eight cows without holding the Pink Cow wins. If several reach eight in the same round, the target rises until one player is a cow ahead.

💡 Strategy Tips

Do not write what you think is correct. Write what the loudest, most average person at the table would write.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Writing the answer you personally believe. The game rewards guessing what the room will say, not being right.
  • Being too specific. If the question is about a fruit, 'apple' wins far more often than 'Granny Smith'.
  • Not agreeing on what counts as the same answer before you start. Decide upfront whether 'dog' and 'puppy' match.
  • Forgetting about the Pink Cow when you are close to eight. A unique answer at the wrong moment can stop you winning.

Advanced Strategy

  • Think about who is actually at the table. A family Christmas and a group of old friends will herd towards different answers.
  • When you hold the Pink Cow, go deliberately mainstream. You need someone else to be the odd one out to get rid of it.
  • Watch the table's mood on early questions. Groups often settle into a style, either literal or jokey, and the herd follows it.
  • In a tie for eight, remember the target rises. Play steady rather than gambling on a clever answer.

Variants & House Rules

Booster Pack

An expansion pack of extra question cards from Big Potato, for groups who have worked through the base deck.

Herd Mentality Mini

A smaller travel edition of the same game that is easy to take on holiday or to the pub.

House rule: write your own questions

Once the deck is familiar, have each player write a question about the group. Inside-joke questions often get the biggest laughs.

Our Verdict

Herd Mentality is simple, silly and very good at what it does. It will not stretch anyone's brain and the BGG rating is modest, but as an icebreaker for a big group of mixed ages it is one of the easiest successes we know. We recommend keeping it in the cupboard for any gathering where nobody wants to learn rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can play Herd Mentality?

BGG lists it for four to twenty players. It really comes alive from about six, and it handles a dozen or more without slowing down much.

What happens if the answers split evenly?

If no single answer has the majority, nobody gets a cow that round.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The box says 10+, and the questions are family-friendly, so it works well with kids, parents and grandparents together.
