About Wits & Wagers

Wits & Wagers from North Star Games is trivia for people who do not know the answers. Every question has a number for an answer, everyone writes a guess, and the guesses are laid out in order on a betting mat. You then bet chips on whichever guess you think is closest without going over, even if it is not yours. Outlying guesses pay better odds, so a hunch can pay off, and nobody is ever out of a round.

Is Wits & Wagers Right for You?

Best for

Wits & Wagers is for groups who like trivia but include people who would normally dread it. Betting on other players' guesses means everyone can score. It is at its best with six or seven players, the most the base game supports, and teams can be used to stretch it to bigger groups.

Maybe skip it if…

Hardcore trivia fans may find the guessing too loose. Groups larger than seven will want the Party edition or to play in teams.

How to Play Wits & Wagers

Setup

Give each player a dry-erase board and pen, their betting markers, and starting chips. Lay out the betting mat.

On Your Turn

  1. Read a question aloud. Everyone writes a numerical guess and places it face down.
  2. Reveal the guesses and arrange them from lowest to highest on the mat, so the middle guess sits on the lowest odds.
  3. Everyone places bets on the guesses, or the space for 'every guess is too high', adding chips if they wish.
  4. Reveal the answer. The closest guess without going over pays out at the odds on its space, and its writer gets a bonus.

How to Win

After seven questions, the player with the most chips wins.

💡 Strategy Tips

You do not need to know anything. Watch who seems confident and bet on them, and spread your two markers rather than doubling up on one guess.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only betting on your own guess. Someone else's answer is often a better bet.
  • Always betting on the middle guess. It pays the lowest odds, and outliers win more often than you think.
  • Forgetting the 'too high' space. If every guess feels high, that space can pay well.
  • Spending too long on each question. Use a timer so the game stays brisk.

Advanced Strategy

  • Look for the player who seems most confident on each question. Bet with them when they know the topic.
  • Split your two bets between neighbouring guesses to cover the range where the answer likely sits.
  • When behind, bet big on long odds in the last rounds. Playing safe will not catch the leader.
  • Write your guess slightly low rather than slightly high. Closest without going over rewards caution.

Our Verdict

Wits & Wagers is the best trivia game for people who do not like trivia. The betting turns every question into a chance to read the room, and nobody is left out. We recommend the base game for groups up to seven, and the Party edition for anything larger.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play Wits & Wagers?

The base game supports three to seven players or teams. For bigger groups, play in teams or look at Wits & Wagers Party.

Do I need to know the answers?

No. You can win by betting on other players' guesses, which is the whole point of the game.

What does 'closest without going over' mean?

The winning guess is the highest one that is not above the real answer. If every guess is too high, the 'too high' space wins.
