About Magic Maze
Magic Maze is a real-time co-operative game where four heroes must raid a shopping mall and escape before the sand timer runs out. The twist is that nobody controls a hero: each player controls an action, such as moving north or exploring, and can use it on any hero. Most of the game is played in silence, so you point, stare, and slam a big red pawn in front of the player you need to act. It is tense, funny and short, and the scenarios add new rules as you go.

Is Magic Maze Right for You?
Best for
Magic Maze is for groups who enjoy co-operative games and do not mind a bit of chaos. It is at its best with four or five players, where everyone has a few actions and the silence is tense. It works with up to eight, though individual players have fewer actions and the game becomes more about watching than doing. It also has a solo mode.
Maybe skip it if…
Players who dislike real-time pressure or being prodded by teammates will find it stressful. Groups who want to talk constantly will struggle with the silence rule.
How to Play Magic Maze
Setup
Place the starting mall tile and the four heroes. Give each player an action tile, start the sand timer and stop talking.
On Your Turn
- There are no turns: everyone acts at once, moving any hero using only the actions on their own tile.
- Explore to add new mall tiles, and use escalators and vortexes to cross the map.
- Moving a hero onto a timer space flips the sand timer; the group may talk until someone moves again.
- Once all four heroes stand on their matching item spaces at the same time, the alarm sounds and they must reach the exits.
How to Win
Everyone wins together if all four heroes escape before the sand timer runs out; if it empties, everyone loses.
💡 Strategy Tips
Use timer spaces to plan, not to celebrate. Those few seconds of talking are your only chance to agree who is going where.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Talking when the timer has not been flipped. The silence is the whole game.
- Ignoring the timer spaces. They are your only chance to talk and reset the timer.
- Waiting for someone else to act. If a hero needs your direction, move them.
- Rushing to explore everywhere. Plan which heroes need to reach which items.
Advanced Strategy
- Use the "Do Something!" pawn often. It is the best way to say "you need to act" without words.
- Learn each player's actions. Knowing who can move where lets you look at the right person.
- Plan escape routes during timer breaks, not just item routes.
- Use the vortexes. They save huge amounts of time.

Our Verdict
Magic Maze is one of the most original co-operative games, and its silent, real-time play makes for a tense and funny evening. It was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres in 2017. It can be frustrating, especially at the highest player counts, but for four or five players willing to embrace the chaos, it is a genuine favourite.
